Why We Stand for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a beautiful island nation located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, just south of India. Known for its lush landscapes, ancient temples, rich culture, and spiritual depth, Sri Lanka has a history that dates back thousands of years. It is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations, shaped by Buddhist values, a deep respect for nature, and strong community traditions.

However, Sri Lanka’s journey through history has been marked by struggle. In 1505, the country was first invaded by the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch, and later the British, who ruled the island until independence in 1948. Over these centuries, Sri Lanka’s natural resources, heritage, and cultural identity were heavily damaged and exploited. Much of what once made this land self-sufficient and spiritually rich was lost. The long-lasting impact of colonization has left deep scars, and many of the systems that support the people—like healthcare, education, and the environment—remain fragile to this day.

Now, as a developing country, Sri Lanka faces many serious challenges. Healthcare remains difficult to access, especially for rural and low-income communities. The education system is under strain, with many children lacking basic school supplies and support. The environment is suffering from growing deforestation, pollution, and damage to marine ecosystems. And in many parts of the country, families still struggle with economic hardship and social instability.

That is why Kalana Mithuro International is committed to standing with Sri Lanka in this time of rebuilding. Our mission is not political—it is human. With compassion at the center of all we do, we bring together support from around the world to uplift communities, restore dignity, protect nature, and give future generations the tools they need to thrive. Through acts of kindness, practical help, and shared values, we believe Sri Lanka can rise again—stronger, more united, and more hopeful than ever before.
